Cybersecurity Predictions for 2023 (Part 1) – Rise in Vishing Attacks

Vishing (Voice phishing) is a social engineering attack where the attacker calls the victim in an effort to extract information. Thirtyseven4 EDR Security Threat Labs have seen a spike in the trend of attackers scanning social networking sites such as Twitter and Facebook to locate disgruntle customers. The(fraudulent) vishing callers then target upset (posting) customers via phone, claiming to represent the organization that the users have posted unsatisfactorily in reference to. The vishing attacks seek to trick victims into providing sensitive information or performing some action in a (fraudulent) effort to supposedly “rectify” the service or product that the victim was unsatisfied with.

Often, the attacker asks the victim to install a screen-sharing application like AnyDesk from the Google Play Store to gain access to the victim’s device. Recently Thirtyseven4 EDR Security Researchers have also observed the prevalence of SMS forwarder Trojans. Banking Trojans and RAT (Remote Access Trojans) can provide greater access to a user’s personal and financial data, and vishing hackers are increasingly capitalizing on this online vehicle of information-sharing. Thirtyseven4 EDR Security Labs predict that in 2023, the threat actors will move into a more predominant-use of this malware, instead of screen-sharing applications to execute attacks.
