Thirtyseven4 EDR Security – Everything old is new again.
As Thirtyseven4 EDR Security Threat Labs and Development Teams move proactively forward each day in the continually evolving cybersecurity landscape of 2023, a glaring observation comes to mind: Everything old is new again. Back in July of 2019, Thirtyseven4 EDR security posted a blog titled, “A Nasty Summer Bug“. The article referenced the reemergence of Emotet and its dominance as the #1 detected malware that summer, even though it “first reared its ugly head in 2014 as a modular banking trojan.”
Last summer (2022) our Thirtyseven4 EDR Security Threat Lab identified Emotet (again) as the top malware in circulation. If the life of Emotet was told via a George Lucas film the movie would likely be titled, ‘Emotet Strikes Back’ or ‘The Return of Emotet’.
Now, here we are staring down the end of March 2023, and once again…Emotet has reared it’s ugly (malicious) head, and has entered our security assessment discussions donning a new disguise: this time the Emotet malware is getting distributed using Microsoft OneNote email attachments, in hopes of slipping through Microsoft security restrictions and aspiring to infect Microsofts many users as unsuspecting targets.
As of today, the Thirtyseven4 EDR Security Threat Lab has already analyzed over 100 unique mutations of Emotet. Cyber thugs continue to be negatively-diligent as they copy and make slight alterations to old code, while also creating new variations with sleek and stealthy techniques to mislead, deceive and infect unexpecting users. As the saying goes, “Everything old is new again”, and Emotet is the latest actor in that play.
The good news is that the same saying goes for quality, proactive, security protection against infections, malware and vulnerabilities: “Everything old is new again”. Thirtyseven4 EDR Security kept you safe before, and we continue to provide robust, break-through, real-time, Endpoint Detection and Response (EDR) Protection to users across the world.
Trust us to protect you.
The best offense is a proactive cyber-security defense, and knowledge. Thirtyseven4 EDR Security provides both.
