Unfortunately, cybercriminals are infringing on the graduation festivities. Hackers with mal-intent are joining in (online) to take advantage of graduation invitations and celebrations. Scammers target graduates in many ways, including the creation of socially engineered emails that masquerade as scholarship-awards, college acceptance letters, or financial aid resources and packaging.
The Thirtyseven4 Security Team has seen a significant rise in recent days in phishing emails disguising themselves as graduation party invites. These emails are deceitfully created as to appear as e-vites coming from legitimate online greeting card services such as Punchbowl or Blue Mountain. The sending address is spoofed to appear as arriving from family and friends within the recipient’s own contact lists.

The recipient is prompted to Open the Invitation.
However, upon clicking the “Open invitation” button, instead of being redirected to the Punchbowl website to open the eCARD, the user gets redirected to a phishing site. The false site will prompt the user to enter login credentials for various platforms to view their eCARD.
This “graduation invite” behavior is a phishing attempt intended to steal the user’s personal information and credentials.
While graduation is in fact a thrilling time that marks both endings and beginnings, it is not the time to let down your guard when it comes to cyber security.
Cyber criminals never graduate from their ill-intent to capitalize on unsuspecting persons.
Don’t invite any malicious behavior to your party and stay vigilant with security practices (and products!) during this exciting time of year.
