Thirtyseven4 EDR Security: Phishing Investment Warning

Managing our money more wisely is always a prudent and productive idea, but Thirtyseven4 EDR Security ThreatLabs are warning users to be wary of websites when seeking to make new investments in the New Year.  There have been significant spikes in fake websites offering financial-related services, and only the informed investor might notice.

It has been observed that cybercriminals are impersonating well-known brands, such as Charles Schwab, Wells Fargo, Fidelity Investments, and Merrill Lynch by publishing fraudulent replicas of these corporate websites. Due to the craftiness, sophistication and attention to detail given to these bogus sites, unknowing visitors get successfully tricked into providing critical personal and banking information.  An alarming number of people are getting conned and financially scammed out of large sums of money and even life savings accounts.

If you’ve received a similar investment-related email or text, please think before you click!  Before blindly clicking on a link you have received in an email or text, do NOT begin sharing your personal financial history without applying the following steps shared by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC):

Check it out – Look up the website or phone number for the company or person behind the text or email. Make sure that you’re getting the real company and that you are not about to download malware or reach out to a scammer.

Talk to someone – Talking to a colleague or family member who might help you to discern if the request is real or a phishing attempt.

Make a call if you’re not sure – Pick up the phone and call the vendor, colleague, or client who sent the email. Confirm that they (are actually) requesting information from you. Use a phone number that you know to be correct (not the number in the questionable email or text).

In addition to the steps listed above, the Thirtyseven4 EDR Security Team also recommends the following:

Notify Local and Cybercrime Authorities

  • File a complaint with your local cybercrime unit or police. Provide all evidence of the fake website.
  • In the United States, you can file a report to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) at gov/Complaint.
  • Many countries have a Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT) for cybersecurity issues. For example, in the United States, you can learn more about and report phishing websites at: https://www.cisa.gov/secure-our-world/recognize-and-report-phishing

Improve your Home or Office Network Website Security

  • Download and install a trusted security solution such as Thirtyseven4 EDR Security.
